AI that takes action: from answering to getting things done
aila team · · 4 min read
AI that takes action does not stop at answering a question: it uses tools to carry the task out, calling, asking, arranging and bringing back the result. The shift saves the user time, but every binding step still needs the user's approval.
Answering and getting things done are not the same
Ask a chat assistant to "find a table for Friday evening" and you usually get a list and a few links. Calling, booking and noting the time are still yours. With AI that takes action, the chain itself passes to the assistant: you state the request, it runs the task and brings the result back.
Technically this rests on tool use. Anthropic's engineering post defines an agent as a system that dynamically directs its own process and tool use. So the difference is not only writing a better answer; it is moving the task itself forward after the answer.
What can it do in 2026?
Here we only report what official sources state with a date. In an announcement dated 25 November 2025 (updated 24 July 2026), Google describes a feature, released in the US, in which Search calls nearby businesses for you to gather stock, price and deal information; a summary of the calls arrives by email or text.
Google's I/O announcement of 19 May 2026 says that in select categories such as home repair, beauty or pet care you can ask Google to call businesses on your behalf, rolling out to US users that summer. Google's help page for businesses adds that these automated calls are offered only in select regions and languages, and that some US states are outside the scope.
So the category is real and growing, but coverage varies by product, country and language. For Turkey and for Turkish, check the product's own page.
Where does it really work?
Today these assistants cope most easily with errands that a short conversation or a few steps can settle, with a clear outcome. This is our assessment, not a sourced classification.
- Booking a table or an appointment: restaurant, barber, hairdresser.
- Asking price, availability and stock and comparing the answers.
- Telling someone you are late, or passing a message and bringing back the reply.
- Bundling linked steps: a table, a calendar entry and a way home.
Limits: reliability, approval and failure cases
Anthropic says an agent's autonomy brings higher costs and the potential for compounding errors. That is why a good assistant does not try to do everything alone; it stops at checkpoints and returns to you where a decision is needed. IBM also lists human approval before highly impactful actions as good practice.
Failure cases should be part of the design. What happens if the line is busy, if nobody answers, if the requested time is full? aila tries up to two more times a few minutes apart if the line is busy or unanswered, tells you if it cannot get through, and does not leave voicemail. If the requested time is full, it takes the closest time within the range you gave. It does not haggle and does not commit money on your behalf.
The absolute accuracy of AI output cannot be guaranteed, so checking details such as date, time and address on the approval screen is on you.
Who should stay in control?
With an assistant that acts, trust depends less on how fluently it speaks and more on where it asks you. Check three things: does it ask for approval before a binding step, does it say what it is when it calls someone, and can you stop a job you started?
With aila, an approval card showing what will be done and who will be called arrives before the call starts; calls, quotes and bookings are never final without your approval. You can cancel a job from the task card. For the full checklist, see our post "Is an AI assistant safe?".
Frequently asked questions
It means AI that does not only produce answers but uses tools to carry the task out: booking, asking, gathering and bringing back the result. Binding steps wait for the user's approval.
Google released a feature in the US in which Search calls businesses for you to gather price and availability; coverage is limited by region, language and category. Sources are listed in the post.
It can. The sources say errors can compound step by step, so checking details at the approval stage matters, as does the assistant returning to you when something unexpected happens.
A well designed one does not. With aila, calls, quotes and bookings are never final without your approval, and it does not decide on topics you have not instructed.
A chatbot mostly offers suggestions and links and you do the task. An assistant that takes action does the calling and arranging itself and brings back the result.
